स्वप्नाचा पाठपुरावा करत प्रत्येक वर्षी मिळालेलं डिस्टिंक्शन... या कहाणीचा शेवट तो तरुण एसी केबिनमध्ये बसून धो धो प्रॅक्टिस करतो , असाच असायला हवा. पण अं हं! कहानी में मोड आया आणि त्याने पूर्णवेळ अॅक्टिंग हे करिअर निवडलं... आयुष्याला वेगळं वळण देणा-या त्या दिवसांविषयी सांगतोय डॉ. अमोल कोल्हे. ..

पुण्याजवळचं नारायणगाव हे माझं गाव. आठवीनंतर भावासोबत पुण्यात आलो. मेरिट लिस्टसाठी प्रसिद्ध असलेली आपटे प्रशाला ही माझी शाळा. बारावीपर्यंत तिथे शिकलो. होस्टेलमध्ये राहायचो. बारावीनंतर मेडिकलला जाताना पुणे की मुंबई हाच प्रश्न होता. मुंबईतलं मेडिकल एज्युकेशन जास्त अॅडव्हान्स्ड असतं असं अनेकांनी सांगितलं. जीएस मेडिकल कॉलेजच्या नावावर शिक्कामोर्तब झालं आणि मी मुंबईत आलो.

जीएसचे सीनिअर्स ज्युनिअर्सशी इण्ट्रोड्युस व्हायचे , ते ' शिदोरी ' नावाच्या कार्यक्रमातून. त्यामुळे नव्या मुलांना आत्मविश्वास यायचा. पहिलं वर्ष नव्या वातावरणाशी जुळवून घेण्यात गेलं. नंतर मात्र इतर उपक्रमांमध्ये रस घ्यायला सुरुवात केली. त्या वर्षी आम्ही ' शांतेचं कार्टं चालू आहे ' हे नाटक केलं. डॉ. अनिल बांदिवडेकर , डॉ. आनंद नाडकर्णी यांच्यासारख्यांनी एकेकाळी आमच्या कॉलेजचं नाव नाटकांच्या जगात गाजवलं होतं. मधली काही वर्षं मात्र शांततेत गेली. आमची परीक्षा जानेवारीत असायची... नेमकी हीच वेळ मुंबईतल्या महत्त्वाच्या नाट्यस्पर्धांची होती. आम्ही या स्पर्धांपासून आपोआपच लांब राहायचो. मग आपणच आपली स्पर्धा का सुरू करू नये , असा विचार आला. त्यातूनच ' अद्वैत ' चा जन्म झाला. ' अपूर्वाई ' या डान्स-ड्रामा कॉम्पिटिशनची आयडिया आम्ही चक्क भांडून आणि नॉनमराठी क्राऊडच्या विरोधात जाऊन डीनला पटवून दिली.

' अपूर्वाई ' च्या निमित्ताने मला माझे गॉडफादर भेटले , सुबल सरकार. या स्पर्धेसाठी आम्हाला डान्स बसवायचे होते. सुबलदांना कॉलेजच्या स्पर्धेच्या कोरिओग्राफीसाठी विचारणं म्हणजे आगाऊपणाच होता. आमचा उत्साह आणि सच्चेपणा त्यांना भावला असावा. त्या दिवसापासून मी त्यांच्याशी जोडला गेलो ते आजतागायत.

कॉलेजमधल्या आणखी एका व्यक्तीमुळे अभिनयक्षेत्रात येण्याचा आत्मविश्वास मिळाला. ते म्हणजे डॉ. रवी बापट. पहिल्या ' अपूर्वाई ' नंतर ते म्हणाले , ' आज तू मला काशीनाथ घाणेकरांची आठवण करून दिलीस. ' मी भारावून गेलो. या क्षेत्रात पूर्णवेळ करिअर कर , असा विश्वास दिला तो त्यांनीच. मात्र मेडिकलचं शिक्षण मात्र पूर्ण करण्याचा आग्रहही धरला. तिस-या वर्षाला असताना आम्हा नाटकवाल्यांची क्लिनिक्स बुडाली होती. खास आमच्यासाठी त्यांनी वेगळी क्लिनिक्स घेतली.

डॉ. बापट , डॉ. अभय दळवी , डॉ. सुपे यांची क्लिनिक्स अजूनही आठवतात. पेशंट ही प्रयोगशाळा नाही तर हाडामांसाचा जिवंत माणूस आहे , हे त्यांच्यामुळेच मनात रुजलं. ' केईएम ' ची कॅज्युअल्टी अजूनही आवडते. १८ ते २० हजार पेशंट्सशी रोज संपर्क येणारी यंत्रणा असलेलं हे हॉस्पिटल आयुष्यात पेशन्स काय असतात ते शिकवून गेलं.

होस्टेल हे माझं दुसरं घरच होतं. पहिलंवहिलं शूट संपवून मी रूमवर गेलो तेव्हा मित्रांनी आंघोळीच्या बादल्या भरून केलेलं कोल्ड्रींकचं कॉकटेल आम्ही मगांनी प्यायलं होतं... माय गॉड , काय दिवस होते! जराही चाहूल लागू न देता रात्री बारा वाजता वाढदिवसाचं सेलिब्रेशन , तोपर्यंत केक लपवण्याचा अट्टाहास.. धमाल असायची. नायगाव होस्टेलमध्ये असताना दिवे बंद करून अंधारात मारलेल्या गप्पा , चांदण्या रात्री होस्टेलसमोरच्या बंद दुकानाच्या पायरीवर केलेल्या गुजगोष्टी हे सगळं विसरता येणारं नाही... होस्टेल तुम्हाला स्वावलंबी करतंच , पण इथे जगाचं भानही येतं.

मी बराच वेळ जिममध्ये असायचो. ही आवड माझा दादा आणि बाबांनी निर्माण केली. पोहणं , बाइक चालवणं , हॉर्स रायडिंग मला शाळेत असल्यापासूनच येतं. एकेकाळी अडीचअडीच तास मी जिममध्ये घालवलेत. आता कार्डिऑलॉजिस्ट असलेला डॉ. जयराम तेव्हा मला गाइड करायचा. त्याने तेव्हा शिकवलेला लोअर बॅक स्ट्रेंथनिंग एक्सरसाइज आता ' शंभूराजे ' करताना उपयोगी पडतोय. मेसचं खाणं पुरं पडणारं नव्हतंच. मी रोज चार केळी , अर्धा लिटर दूध आणि चार अंडी खायचो. फिजिकली फिट असणं किती महत्त्वाचं आहे , हे या क्षेत्रात आल्यावर चांगलंच जाणवतंय. जीएसचा कट्टा हे जरा ' खास ' प्रकरण आहे. कॅण्टीनसमोरच्या कट्ट्यावर कटिंग चहा घेताघेता कॅण्टीन आणि लायब्ररी अशा दोन्ही ठिकाणी ' लक्ष ' देता यायचं. लायब्ररीसमोरचा कट्टा हा ' कपल स्पेशल ' होता. तिथे एकत्र बसणं म्हणजे काहीतरी शिजतंय हे जाहीर केल्यासारखंच असायचं. जीएसमध्ये न जाता मी इतर कुठल्याही कॉलेजात गेलो असतो तर डॉक्टर नक्कीच झालो असतो , मात्र अभिनेता बनलो असतो की नाही कोण जाणे... ऑल द क्रेडिट गोज टू माय कॉलेज!
Mumbai medico plays Shivaji in tele-serial of Star Pravah

Mumbai, Oct 20 (IANS) A doctor from the KEM Hospital is playing the lead role of Chhatrapati Shivaji in the maiden tele-serial of Marathi entertainment channel Star Pravah, launched by the Star Group here Monday.
The medico, Dr. Amol Khole, is playing the lead role in 'Raja Shiv Chhatrapati' based on the life and times of the great Maratha warrior.
Bollywood and TV actress Mrinal Kulkarni is playing the role of Rajmate Jijabai, the mother of Shivaji who went on to found the Maratha empire. The serial is produced by Chandrakant Productions.
The channel Star Pravah was inaugurated Monday morning by Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh in the presence of Shiv Sena executive president Udhav Thackeray at a glittering ceremony held at the sprawling ND Studios at Karjat, outside Mumbai.
For the inauguration, a replica of the historic Raigad Fort and a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji were erected at the studio complex.

Star India today announced the launch of its Marathi general entertainment channel ‘Star Pravah’, which will go on air soon. Noted art director, Nitin Desai’s Marathi serial ‘Raja Shivachhatrapati’ will be one of the most awaited prime-time show on the new channel. The announcement of the channel and the show were made at Desai’s N D studios in Karjat this morning. Uday Shankar, CEO of Star India said that with ‘Star Pravah’, the network hopes to touch the cord of viewers and set a new benchmark in multi-genre Marathi content on TV. “The discerning viewers of Maharashtra are unwilling to accept mundane regular format and are looking forward for realistic, non-melodramatic and meaningful stories,” Shankar said.
Epics like ‘Raja Shivachhatrapati’ promise to change the world of Marathi television viewing and will also bring new levels of diversities and set higher standards in the world of Marathi entertainment, he added.
The ‘Rajya Abhishek’ (coronation ceremony) of Shivaji Maharaj was shot on the grand sets depicting the Raigad fort.
The shooting was witnessed by Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, Shiv Sena Working President Uddhav Thackeray, Chhatrapati Shambaji Raje of Kolhapur, a descendant of Shivaji and shivshree.purushottamji khedekar of maratha seva sangh and other prominent personalities.
Speaking on the occassion, Chief Minister Deshmukh said, “the government has sent a proposal to the Archaeological Society of India to transfer back all the forts used by Shivaji Maharaj, which require the frequent involvement of the state government to us.”

Shivaji’s descendant, Chhatrapati Shambaji Raje said that he has sought permission from the Central Government to erect a life size statue of Shivaji Maharaj at the Raigad fort.

Uddhav Thackeray however, lamented that the state needs to take permission from Delhi for every small thing. Meanwhile, Nitin Desai said that a serial on Shivaji Maharaj had always been his dream. He thanked the Chief Minister for helping him with all the permissions to shoot at the Raigad, Pratapgad and Rajgad forts.

“Making an epic on a personality that has left a mark on the hearts and minds of everyone is a huge challenge,” Desai said.

Giving grandeur a new meaning, each element on the set has been carefully crafted keeping in mind the nuances of the Maratha era, he added.

Dr.Amol Kolhe plays the character of Shivaji, Mirnal Kulkarni of Jijabai, Avinash Narkar as Shahaji and Neelam Shirke plays Shivaji’s wife Soryabai. The series is being directed by Hemant Deodhar.

Kulkarni said that playing the role of Jijabai was the most challenging role of her career.
